2011 CT Specialty Food Product Awards Announced

Hartford, CT – The CT Specialty Food Association (CSFA) held its tenth Product Awards Competition on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville.  Three hundred twenty-nine specialty food items from Connecticut-based manufacturers were entered into 38 categories, with hopes of receiving the prestigious honor of CSFA Product Award Winner 2011.

A panel of 40 judges consisting of local media personalities, food writers, and chefs from the CT Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-Chef Program scored products on overall taste/flavor, consistency/texture, appeal, and color.  Each judge was assigned to specific categories, responsible for evaluating an average of approximately 30 different products.

Categories included breads, cheese, confections, CT Grown, fruits and vegetables, gift packs, gluten-free, organic, pasta sauces, savory condiments, snack foods, and many others.   We also proudly included a variety of CT wines along with beers, ales and distilled spirits all produced here in Connecticut.  The wide array of products featured fresh breads, ice cream and sauces, jams and jellies, salad greens, pestos, pickles, juices, hot teas and coffees, flavored seeds, oils and vinegars, and much, much more.

Winding Drive jams opens facility in Middle Quarter Mall, Woodbury

Winding Drive Inc announce the opening of their jam & jelly manufacturing facility in Middle Quarter Mall, Woodbury.   The 1400 square foot facility contains a professional kitchen, inventory and warehouse space, as well as an office area.   ‘By combining all three functions at a single location, we expect to more effectively grow our company’, said Fran Adams and Ron Pinto, the husband-and-wife founders’ team.

Begun in the summer of 2008, Winding Drive specializes in gourmet jams and jellies.  The product is made by hand in small batches and is characterized by unique flavor combinations, in addition to traditional flavors.  When selecting fruit for their jams, the owners place an emphasis on seasonally fresh Connecticut-grown fruit.  Customers look for the unique flavor combinations such as Blood Orange Marmalade, Raspberry Chocolate Jam, Halapeno Gold Jelly, and the savory combination of Caramelized Onion and Roasted Garlic. They will also find old-fashioned jellies such as Crab Apple, Elderberry and Quince.   And traditionalists will delight in Strawberry, Blueberry, Peach, and Raspberry among other flavors.  Ms Adams’ culinary interests produce the ‘sensational flavor combinations’ for discriminating tastes.

The jellies and jams may be purchased in Woodbury at Ayla’s Bagels, Ovens of France, and New Morning Organic.  Customers will also find the jams and jellies at Marie’s Country Furniture in Southbury, March Farms in Bethlehem, The Smithy in New Preston and Bantam Bread in Bantam along with Wild Carrot Farm in Canton and The Stietzel Family Farm in Redding and Papineau Studio in Litchfield. If you are traveling in North Carolina you can enjoy Winding Drive Jams for breakfast, lunch and tea at the Fearrington Village Inn in Pittsboro, NC.

With Mr. Pinto's marketing expertise and Ms. Adams culinary flair, Winding Drive anticipates their product will soon be found in specialty food stores throughout Connecticut as well as neighboring states.
